Phase IV

Phase IV of the GEA project builds on previous phases and consists of two major components taking into consideration specific suggestions made by the project’s Indigenous partners, the recommendations made in the report itself and in the Reykjavík Declaration 2021, in addition to referring to the Arctic Council Strategic Plan 2021-2030. The project will continue its philosophy of inclusiveness and rely heavily on collaboration between multiple stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, and civil society representatives. 

The primary components of the GEA IV are: 

  1. Mainstreaming gender-based analysis in the work of the Arctic Council to advance gender equality in the Arctic, including both procedural and data related workshops and outputs.  

  2. A podcast series on ´Sharing wisdom and knowledge´, an Indigenous-led component focusing on thematic online events and interviews for dissemination of topics of particular interest to GEA Indigenous partners. 

Ongoing work   

  • An online workshop on Arctic Council gender mainstreaming and gender-based analysis was organized and set to take place in late February 2022. Due to the Arctic Council's pause of activities the workshop was postponed.   

  • A hybrid workshop on gender and disaggregated data in the Arctic Region was held in Akureyri, Iceland and online on the 15th and 16th of March 2023 with the support of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. 35 participants took part in person with an additional 25 participants online. Participants included representatives from academia, governments, statistical agencies, Indigenous experts, youth, LGBTQIA, and two-spirit experts, as well as lead authors of the GEA report, data study researchers, and a representative from the UN Women Data Division 

  • A Study on Existing Data and Challenges to Gender and Sex Disaggregated Data in the Arctic Region is currently in development, jointly funded by Canada and Finland.  

  • ´Sharing Wisdom and Knowledge´ will be a series of online events and interviews to address the themes: Decolonization and Indigenization from Cultural and Spiritual Perspectives; Governance and Decision-Making Processes; Human Rights of Arctic Indigenous Peoples; Human Security and Social Justice from a Gendered Lens. In preparatory phase.

  • March 2022 - Webinar on Gender Equality and Empowerment in the Arctic. Side event at the UN Commission on the Status of Women 66.   • August 2022 – In person session on Gendered Diplomacy during the Arctic Circle Forum in Nuuk. Organised by the Government of Greenland, Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network. 

  • October 2022. Plenary on Gender Equality and Diversity in Arctic Leadership at the Arctic Circle Assembly. Organised by the Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network, the Arctic Circle, the Icelandic Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Iceland. Included Mary Simon Governor General of Canada, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Prime Minister of Iceland, and Naaja H. Nathanielsen, Minister of Finance and Gender Equality, Greenland.

  • September 2023 – Online presentation at Nordic Information Network Gender. Organized by NING. 

  • October 2023 – In person session on Gender and Disaggregated Data in the Arctic Region, at Arctic Circle Assembly. Organized by Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs (Canada), Icelandic Arctic Cooperation Network, Directorate of Equality 

  • October 2023 – In person session on Gender Equality in the Arctic: A Closer Look. Organized by the European Union.
